HOW TO MAKE YOUR PIECE LAST A LIFETIME

So you’ve found the perfect piece, you’ve created a beautiful space that you’re proud of - now how do you keep it this way? A high quality piece should hold its form through the constant movement of life, but a little bit of love and care can go a long way. Here are our top tips for looking after your treasured solid timber pieces.

Solid timber is a great selection for furniture, we love its raw beauty, elegant finish and sturdy build. As a natural material, over time it may expand and contract due to changes in temperature and humidity. Occasionally this can result in small cracks and separation. To maximise the lifespan of your piece, be mindful of where it is placed, making sure it’s not exposed to direct sunlight, fireplaces, heavy air-conditioning or dampness for long periods of time.

Some timber pieces are finished with a lacquer or a stain, while others are left in their raw form. When cleaning your piece, consider its surface in order to provide it with the best care.

For untreated or raw wood pieces, start by using a slightly damp cloth to brush away any dust, always wiping gently in the direction of the grain to preserve its beautiful organic patterns. Then dip a cloth in soapy water, wringing out the excess and wiping the entire piece. Make sure to rinse and dry with a smooth cloth, absorbing as much moisture as possible to prevent it from soaking into the wood.

Pieces that are stained or lacquered have a waterproof layer that preserves the wood underneath (read more about our non-toxic finishes here). These pieces can be cared for in the same way that you would wipe down a kitchen bench top, using a warm soapy cloth or a spray and wipe, and then drying away any excess liquid to prevent water spots.

Our solid timbers are able to handle a warm plate or mug of tea, however we recommend placing a mat between surfaces and any hot dishes to prevent discolouration in finishes or any residual marks. Spills should be quickly wiped up so excess liquid doesn’t seep through the top layer into the wood.

While you try your best to look after the cherished pieces in your home, sometimes wear and tear is unavoidable. We believe this adds a little character, and brings your piece to life. If your solid timber pieces need a little pick me up, here are our suggestions. Light scratches may just be surface level, affecting only the finish. In which case you can refill the scratch with a top up of finish. If the scratch is deeper you can use wax to fill the gap and coat with polish. One of the main advantages of timber furniture is that it can be sanded and refinished if it starts to look too tired for your space.

All our pieces have been designed and handcrafted to evolve with you and really embed themselves into your home. Your dining table is where you and your loved ones gather for a meal, it is a place to share stories and connect. Sherwood Designs creates furniture that hold the warmth of these special moments. Any nicks and dents simply enhance the character of the piece and hold onto these memories for lifetimes.

KEEPING YOUR SPECIAL PIECES IN GOOD CONDITION DOESN’T HAVE TO BE A HUGE TASK. AS LONG AS YOU KEEP THEM CLEAN AND DRY, THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO BE CHERISHED AND PASSED ALONG FOR YEARS TO COME. AND IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR AN UPDATE, FEEL FREE TO TAKE A PEEK AT OUR RANGE OF SOLID TIMBER PIECES FOR SOMETHING NEW FOR YOUR SPACE.
